This Is Not a Government Records Office. Virginia Residents Directory is privately operated and cannot retrieve or certify a document, confirm who lives at an address, or edit an official roll. Direct those requests to the custodian named on the source page. Call 911 for an immediate emergency; contact local police about stalking or harassment.
Find the Right Records Office
Use the page that matches the record question, then contact the public office or archive that holds the original:
- Property and street records: follow the Virginia street search to the local parcel, assessor, and circuit-clerk systems.
- Older directories: use the Virginia city directory collection notes to locate the right year and archive.
- One person's public record: use the Virginia resident lookup steps to compare records and custodians.
- Local office routing: start at Virginia's government finder or the circuit court clerk directory.
- Records held by a covered public body: read the Virginia FOIA guidance and send a specific request to the office that keeps the record.

That office handles eligible vital-record requests. For deeds, probate, court cases, property cards, voter lists, and municipal files, use the local clerk, assessor, registrar, or records officer for the locality. Virginia FOIA covers many government records, but court-clerk inspection rules and confidentiality limits still apply. The Freedom of Information Advisory Council guide explains the state request process.
